At some given moment it happens that the child becomes deeply interested in a piece of work; we see it in the expression on his face, his intense concentration, the devotion to the exercise.

8:15 AM - 9:00 AM: Arrival

Children arrive at school and are greeted by their teachers and classmates. They begin the day practicing foundational care-of-self activities, such as stowing their items in their cubbies, changing their shoes, and washing their hands.

9:00 AM - 10:15 AM: Outdoor Gross Motor Play

The children spend time on the rooftop terrace and playscape moving their bodies and socializing. Alternatively, the classes may go on walks to the park or other sites in the community.

10:15 AM - 10:45 AM: Morning Meeting

There is a daily community gathering during which children hear stories, sing songs together, and discuss topics related to the classroom’s current curriculum. At this meeting the children also carryout their weekly jobs, such as reporting the weather and reading the calendar.

10:45 AM - 12:30 PM: Morning Work Cycle

The work cycle is a foundational part of a Montessori classroom, and serves as a protected time dedicated to children’s concentration and independence. During the work cycle in our Early Childhood program, children are able to explore the classroom and choose work from the shelves that appeals to them. Teachers support children by giving lessons on new materials and leading small-group explorations within our prepared classroom environments. During the work cycle, children are welcome to serve themselves snacks should they become hungry. The classes may also visit one of our outdoor terraces, or go on walks to the park or other sites in our community.

12:30 PM - 1:30 PM: Lunch and Rest Period

Children tidy up after the work cycle, wash their hands, and prepare to eat lunch at school with their friends and teachers. People across the world gather over food each day, and we believe that the experience of sitting together for meals builds a sense of community in our classrooms. Teachers may sing songs, play music, or tell stories while eating alongside their class. After the meal is finished, children are welcome to rest or play quietly.

1:30 PM - 2:30 PM: Outdoor Gross Motor Play

All of the extended day students combine into one classroom at 1:30. Then they go to the rooftop terrace to move their bodies and socialize.

2:30 PM - 4:30 PM: Afternoon Work Cycle

Children have a second opportunity to work with the materials in the classroom during an uninterrupted work cycle. During this time the children may be introduced to a new project or materials.
